Kilim or Berber? How to find the rug that truly suits you
You're scrolling through our shop and keep pausing at a cream-colored Berber rug and a graphically colorful Kilim rug. Both would be lovely. Both somehow fit. But which one truly belongs to you—and your home?
The good news: You don't have to decide blindly. There are a few simple questions that will make everything clearer.
What is a Berber rug?
Berber rugs originate from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, hand-knotted by women of the Berber tribes. What distinguishes them: a rich high pile made of natural wool, a soft, dense texture, and a color palette that is almost always earthy and natural – cream white, ivory, gray, sand tones.
Berber rugs feel warm – literally. They dampen sound, add depth to a room, and invite you to walk barefoot on them. They are almost unbeatable for bedrooms, children's rooms, or a cozy living area.
Ideal for: Scandi interior, minimalist living, rooms needing more warmth, families with children.
What is a Kilim?
A Kilim is not a knotted but a woven rug – the pattern is created directly in the weaving process, not by knots. This makes it flatter, lighter, and easier to maintain. The patterns are geometrically precise and often very graphic: diamonds, zigzags, stripes, abstract flowers.
Kilims broadly exist in two worlds: colorful and playful in a boho look, or strictly monochromatic minimalism. Both variations suit modern interiors – they make a statement rather than blending in.
Ideal for: dining rooms, hallways, brightly lit rooms, those who love patterns but don't want chaos.
Both in comparison
Texture: Berber = high pile, soft → Kilim = flat, firm
Care: Berber requires a bit more attention (stains deeper in the pile) → Kilim easier to clean
Appearance: Berber = organic, natural → Kilim = graphic, statement
Price: The Kilim is slightly more affordable – both are handmade unique pieces
Our recommendation by room
Bedroom: Berber, especially Beni Ouarain and Beni Mrirt. Soft when waking up, warm atmosphere.
Living room: Depends on the style – Berber for coziness, Kilim for a statement. Dining room: Kilim – easier to clean, lies flat, chairs glide better.
Hallway: Kilim runner – hard-wearing, easy to clean.
Children's room: Berber – cuddly floor, no sharp edges in the pattern.
There is no right or wrong – only what suits your life.
Checklist – 3 questions to help you decide
