Cleaning and care instructions for handmade carpets
Hand-knotted rugs are works of art with a story – and with proper care, they can last a lifetime. Here you'll learn how to best care for and clean your rug so that it remains beautiful and valuable.
🔄 General care instructions (for all handmade rugs)
-
Vacuum regularly : 1-2 times per week with a vacuum cleaner without a rotating brush. Always vacuum in the direction of the fabric fibers.
-
Don't forget to turn it : Turn the rug every 6 months to prevent even wear and discoloration from light.
-
Avoid direct sunlight : Strong UV radiation can fade colors – it's best to protect the area in partial shade or with curtains.
-
Avoid furniture marks : Heavy furniture can flatten fibers – use felt pads or move the carpet gently and regularly.
💧 Remove stains – quickly and gently
-
Immediately dab fresh stains with kitchen paper or an absorbent cloth (do not rub!).
-
Use lukewarm water with a little natural soap or wool detergent .
-
Gently dab with a soft cloth until the stain disappears.
-
Rinse with clean water and pat dry.
-
Allow to air dry , preferably spread out flat.
⚠️ Do not use harsh cleaners or steam cleaners – they can destroy the natural oils in the wool!
🐑 Special notes for Berber carpets (e.g. Beni Ourain)
-
Deep-pile Berber carpets love air and care – shake them out regularly or let them air out outside in good weather.
-
For high-pile carpets, gently loosen them occasionally with a carpet brush.
-
Natural wool protectant (lanolin spray) can help keep the fibers supple.
-
For heavy soiling: Professional carpet cleaning for hand-knotted carpets (no chemical process!).
🧵 Special notes for kilim rugs
-
Flat-woven fabrics made of wool are particularly easy to care for, as dirt usually only adheres to the surface.
-
Usable on both sides – simply turn over regularly!
-
Ideal for beating or airing out – gently beat the back (e.g. over a carpet rod).
-
Please only dab stains with a damp cloth , never clean with excessive moisture – otherwise colors may run.
Conclusion
With a little attention, regular airing, and careful maintenance, your rug will not only stay clean but also vibrant in structure and color – whether it's a kilim or a Berber. A well-cared-for rug tells stories for decades – perhaps even for generations.
