The five most important characteristics of a genuine Beni Mrirt
1. The Wool
Genuine Beni Mrirt carpets are knotted from highland sheep wool – often unwashed or minimally treated to preserve the natural oils. This makes the pile unusually soft and gives it a slight sheen. If a carpet feels synthetic or uniformly smooth, that's a warning sign.
2. The Pile
Beni Mrirt carpets have a medium to high pile – typically between 2 and 4 cm. The pile is dense and springs back immediately when pressed. A flat or too uniform pile indicates machine manufacturing.
3. The Patterns
Classic Beni Mrirt patterns are geometric – diamonds, lines, grid structures and monochrome with color gradients. The patterns are not perfectly symmetrical because they originate from the memory of the weavers, not from a template. These small irregularities are not flaws – they are the sign of genuine handcraft.

4. The Back
Turn the carpet over. On a hand-knotted Beni Mrirt, you will see the individual knots on the back – uneven, dense, firm. A smooth or uniformly structured back is an indication of machine manufacturing.
5. The Weight
Genuine Beni Mrirt carpets are heavy. A medium-sized carpet (approx. 150x200 cm) easily weighs 8–12 kg. The weight comes from the density of the knots and the quality of the wool. Light carpets with a similar appearance are almost always imitations.
